In 1983 a Pentecostal pastor in Lafayette, Louisiana gave a few brothers in his church several books by Witness Lee, which he had received from some Christians in Shreveport. These books were frowned upon because they had not been published by that particular denomination, yet some of these brothers read them and couldn’t put them down. These brothers began to have fellowship together and began to see truths in the Bible that they had never seen before. The Bible became a new book to them, full of so many enjoyable riches of Christ that they had never experienced before.
Then their pastor told them about an upcoming conference of some local churches in Texas. Eight brothers drove to the conference excited yet somewhat skeptical while their wives stayed home to pray for them. Some went home early, but others saw oneness among brothers, glorious revelations from the Word, and a vision of the practical church life. They had to have what the believers at the conference had. They begin to pray together in the mornings and evenings and have fellowship about the Word, their experience of Christ, and their love for the brothers. Spontaneously they began to pray-read the Bible, that is, to pray the verses in the Bible. Their meetings were healthy and enjoyable and a supply to the brothers and their wives and to two other new couples.
Then they tried to figure out how to meet, which was confusing and frustrating. Some brothers and sisters began to move to Lafayette from other local churches to help them. Not one of them ever preached a sermon, and there was no teaching about how to meet. They just loved the believers there and enjoyed the Lord with them, and they all began to grow in the divine life together. Now the church in Lafayette is a stable family of believers enjoying the church life together with the whole Body of Christ.
